I feel totally blessed to be working with the blind children

It's funny to look back on the year and see how much I've learned by simply working at St. Vincent's School for the Blind and Partially Sighted.  The kids are so challenging to work with, but fill me with such joy.  I honestly look forward to going to work every day.  Now, it didn't necessarily start out like that.  The first day I was TERRIFIED.  I had never worked with blind or disabled kids (and most of the kids in the school are blind AND have some sort of mental disability).  I had no idea what the kids would be like, or what I could possibly do for them.  But now that I'm 6 months in, I feel totally comfortable around the kids.  I love joking with them, making them laugh, and helping learn in the classroom and how to swim.  I'm completely blessed to be working with them, and don't want to think about my time here ending.

To add a funny story that happened the other day...I was working with Harris, a 5 year old in the swimming pool, and I was trying to get him to blow bubbles.  Well, I told him half the fun was the noise it makes.  So I said, "just stick your mouth below the water and blow out, like this" and proceeded to blow bubbles.  Harris, hearing the noise, sticks his mouth below the water, brings it back up, and spits a bunch of water in my face making the EXACT noise that I had made blowing bubbles, but just did it by spitting in my face.  I didn't think to tell him that your mouth STAYS below the water.  I simply just had to laugh.

A little about me...

I'm originally from Mundelein, IL in the suburbs of Chicago.  I've lived there my entire life with my mom, dad and two sisters. I went to university at the University of Notre Dame where I studied Psychology and Pre-med.  I just graduated in May and when I return from being a VV I hope to go straight into graduate school for becoming a physical therapist. I've known for a very long time that at some point I wanted to do service/volunteer work, but I wasn't sure where, when, or what. Once I made the resolution to go to graduate school, I decided it would be a good idea to take a year off to do service.  I heard of Vincentian Volunteers through my university, applied, interviewed, was accepted and came!  So far it's been absolutely amazing.  I've learned so much about myself, now that I'm completely out of my comfort zone. I've also learned so much about working with blind and disabled children and people. I've learned to become much more patient with people and have a completely new definition of what beautiful means.
