Community

The local community has a co-ordinator who is there to support each person in the group, and to help in the formation of the new community.

The co-ordinator is always someone who is part of the larger Vincentian Family in one way or another, and shares the Vincentian spirit.  She/he is there as a facilitator, an advisor, the first port of call in any difficulty and above all a wise friend and companion for the year.

Community nights:

At least one evening each week is reserved for the local community, with their co-ordinator. This is not an optional extra but an essential part of the life of the Vincentian Volunteer.  These weekly meeting help to build the community: sharing a meal, praying together, exchanging ideas and experiences in a safe and confidential environment.  The community nights are meant to be creative – there is no set formula, but the elements are there and what is crucial is that they happen every week.  Difficulties can be sorted out in this kind of atmosphere and the little misunderstandings that happen as a result of daily life, and each person is free to be themselves.

Community houses:

The houses used by the volunteers are all in poorer areas of the city.  They are fairly basic but in good repair and have all the essentials including phone and internet access.  The volunteers are responsible for keeping the house in good repair, and ensuring its safety as far as possible.  All utilities bills (water, gas, electricity, Council Tax) are paid for by the Trust.  The volunteers are responsible for telephone and internet bills.

“It is very important to have fun in community….fun fosters harmony by preventing us being overly serious about ourselves!”  Fr R. Maloney C.M
