Presenter: Sr Brenda
The Holy Island of Lindisfarne has been a sacred place since the 7th century, when St Aidan chose to found his monastery here, and from where the Christian message flourished and spread throughout the world. Holy Island is first of all a place of pilgrimage. It is unique in that it is cut off from the mainland at least twice a day, and so has a life of its own. It is a place of tranquillity, spirituality and scenic beauty, called “the jewel in the crown of Northumbria.” Thousands of visitors are received there every year.
Holy Island is the perfect place in which to talk about prayer, because its whole history is about the men of prayer who lived there hundreds of years ago. Sister Brenda who gives the input over the weekend, offers the volunteers many different ways of reaching out to God, as well as sharing her own extensive knowledge of the history of these Celtic, northern saints. A weekend on Holy Island is the perfect opportunity for all our volunteers, especially those from overseas, to experience ancient Christianity at its roots.
And of course it is an ideal place for walks, for admiring the scenery, for being quiet and having times of relaxation too! Most volunteers enjoy the feeling of being cut off from the rest of the world!
