St Vincent’s, on the outskirts of Liverpool caters for pupils as young as four years old, to post 16, and offers day and residential education on a weekly basis. The school was opened in 1850, and has a long and successful tradition of excellence in the care and education of children with a visual impairment.
“Inspired by the example of St Vincent, we work together in a safe and caring atmosphere where a high standard of education and care is provided.” (Mission Statement)
The Vincentian Volunteer works in the school as a support person in the classroom, although it is possible for them to be part of out-of-school and residential activities. In the classroom the volunteer will support an individual child or a group of children. The classes are very small so the VV has a great opportunity to engage with the young people, and to learn many new skills for themselves. The volunteer is expected to be part of the life of the school, and is given the opportunity to be involved in many activities depending on their own interest and gifts. For those who are interested, the school has a particular speciality in music and has a long association with the Liverpool Philharmonic. The children have PE and swimming lessons in their own pool and this is an excellent opportunity for interaction on a one to one basis.
Norah is the placement co-ordinator who works out a suitable timetable for the volunteer and the school, and she will give maximum support and supervision at regular intervals over the year, so ensuring that this is a good experience for everyone.
