Locations
Each volunteer is placed in an organisation that is committed to working with people who are in some way disadvantaged or marginalised in the society in which we live.
The placements we are running this year are in Liverpool and Manchester. In the past we have also served in Glasgow, Hull, London and Newcastle.
Manchester:
Our work in Manchester is concerned with people who are experiencing hunger, homelessness and the rootlessness that comes from poverty, alcohol, drug abuse, and lack of resources. We work with families who have someone in prison, or who are displaced, and so looking for sanctuary in this country. Some of the organisations work at the root causes of this kind of poverty; others are there just to offer a helping, friendly hand.
Liverpool:
In Liverpool our work is concentrated round three places where we see education, rehabilitation and support services being offered to children and adults who have a sensory and/or learning impairment. This is a different kind of poverty but one that is very real. In our second placement we meet children who are experiencing the pain that comes from lack of parenting, fear of violence or abuse, and gang warfare. We don’t change lives but we do share our gifts, and offer the hand of friendship to many.
